The debate over fuel subsidy and how best to cushion Nigerians from rising living costs took centre stage during Dr. Muda Yusuf’s appearance on TVC’s Journalists’ Hangout.
Dr. Yusuf, Chief Executive Officer of the Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), argued that government relief should be targeted at the areas where households feel the greatest pressure, particularly transportation, food, healthcare and education.
He noted that a reduction in the price of petrol does not necessarily translate into lower transportation costs, stressing the need for more direct interventions such as subsidised mass transit, stronger public transportation systems and support for agriculture.
Dr. Yusuf also highlighted the role of state and local governments in providing relief, arguing that reducing the cost of living cannot be the responsibility of the Federal Government alone.
